It doesn’t take much convincing to believe that turkey is better for you than beef. But what about it makes it a better choice for you and your family? Well, we may be biased, so we’ll let the evidence speak for itself.  Here are the top five reasons turkey should be part of your New Year’s resolution.

  1. Protein. Turkey is a rich source of protein. One 3oz portion of roasted turkey breast, without skin, according to the National Turkey Federation, has 26g of protein and only 120 calories. It has less cholesterol, sodium, and fat than chicken, too! Protein is valuable for a host of reasons. Not only does protein make you feel full which prevents snacking, but it also aids in the production of lean muscle.

  2. Low fat. Now there may be varying opinions on the healthiness of fat. Some are of the mind that real fats, i.e. animal fats, are healthy. Some are adamant all fat is bad. Regardless, it's much easier to cut fat by choosing turkey. A naturally lean meat source, you won’t have to drain your ground turkey or trim before carving.

  3. Vitamins. Turkey is rich in B-6, B-12, and niacin, vitamins essential for energy production. It also packs a better calcium punch than chicken, with a whopping 32 mg per 3.5oz serving of back and leg meat . You’d only find 11mg in the same portion of chicken. To keep you energized for the new year, turkey is the answer. It is also a great source of iron, potassium, phosphorus, and zinc, all essential vitamins to keep you going through the new year.

  4. Amino Acids. You’ve likely heard of tryptophan, the amino acid turkey has that supposedly makes you sleepy. Well it also plays an important role in strengthening the immune system by producing serotonin. Fight off those winter colds and stay healthy with turkey’s help.

  5. Cholesterol. Turkey takes the win when it comes to cholesterol compared with the rest of the meat lineup. There is also a healthier balance of unsaturated fats to saturated fats compared to chicken.
